Curricula

The Master's Degree in European and American Languages and Literatures offers four curricula that train in different skills.

Curriculum 1: Languages, literatures and translation (two compulsory languages) will enable students to acquire specific skills concerning European and European American literatures, languages and cultures, as well as the written translation of literary texts by setting up a laboratory of literary translation.

Curriculum 2: Linguistics and philology (monolingual) aims to provide instruction of the main theoretical instruments of linguistic and philological analysis in diachronic and synchronic perspective, and includes a laboratory of digital culture.

Curriculum 3: Italian-German Bilateral Studies and Curriculum 4: Italian-Hungarian Bilateral Studies, are aimed at training highly competent graduates in the language, literature and foreign culture stated in the curriculum of choice and develop comparative skills with respect to the Italian language and literature. 

Using the cooperation of European universities, and on the basis of appropriate conventions, bilateral curricula involve cultural exchanges with the Universities concerned (Bonn and Budapest), the mobility of students and teachers and the development of teaching and research projects of bilateral and international interest. These curricula enable students to acquire active and passive knowledge of the Italian language, literature and culture and of the other language and literature and culture chosen by the student, and the use of electronic, online and multimedia tools, to operate with the appropriate skills in the realm of school and lifelong learning, in the context of the translation of texts in the humanities and social sciences, as well as in publishing and the organization of events and cultural enterprises of bilateral interest. Graduates will be able to fill high-responsibility positions in the context of European cultural integration while respecting the balanced development of European multilingualism. To this end, internships and traineeships are planned to take place in public and private entities in Italy and the countries concerned, especially in State archives and libraries in Italy and other countries, in university or commercial publishing houses interested in the production of traditional, multimedia and on-line book assets, as well as in Italian and European companies and cultural agencies.
In the framework of the relevant intergovernmental agreements, and on the basis of specific scientific and learning agreements (http://accordi-internazionali.cineca.it) aimed at increasing internationalization processes, innovative training projects have been implemented (using also multilingual interactive platforms) between the University of Florence and both the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität of Bonn and the Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem (ELTE) of Budapest. According to the MIUR note of 16 February 2011, which implements DM 22 September 2010, n. 17, these agreements provide for the further development of the mobility of students and teaching staff; the acquisition of a double degree, Italian and foreign, according to the type b) indicated in the note itself, is also envisaged.

Curriculum 5: Italian-French Bilateral Studies in Translation Theory and Practice are aimed at students who have an excellent mastery of the two languages and intend to develop skills related to the profession of the translator (technical, literary, generalist), providing, moreover, high-level training on IT tools and digital assets related to translation. As a winner of the Italian-French University's Vinci 2019 competition, the double degree benefits from funding to support students of the program during their stays at the partner university (seminars/mobility during the second year). 

There is no selection to be admitted to Curricula 1 and 2, except for the access requirements laid out in Art. 3 of the Regulations. For Curricula 3, 4, and 5, read more below:

• Please note that there are two different Hungarian locations to choose from:
  • Budapest: the Florentine qualification in European and American Languages and Literature / Italian-Hungarian Bilateral Studies Curriculum is jobtained in conjunction with the Hungarian Master's degree either in Olasz Nyelv, Irodalom és Kultúra Mesterszak (Philologist in Italian Language, Literature and Culture, MA) or in Magyar Nyelv és Irodalom Mesterszak (Philologist in Hungarian Language and Literature, MA) or in Irodalom- és Kultúratudomány Mesterszak (Philologist of Literary and Cultural Studies, MA) with the possibility to gain the qualification to teach Italian language and literature in Hungarian high schools.   • Debrecen: the Florentine title in European and American Languages and Literature / Italian-Hungarian Bilateral Studies Curriculum is obtained in conjunction with the Master's degree inForditó és tolmács Mesterszak (Translation and Interpreting, MA).
